Local Factories: 2 New Recycling Micro-Factories Under Construction in the Philippines
A Collaboration between DELFINGEN and Plastic Odyssey
After two years of partnership in support of the expedition, the DELFINGEN teams are now engaging in field projects developed by Plastic Odyssey Factories. This new challenge aims to add value to waste on the island by setting up two recycling micro-factories in Cebu and Manila. The two containers will house the machines necessary to transform plastic waste into new materials or objects.
Plastic Odyssey Recycling Micro-Factories
These micro-factories are local, practical solutions for innovative and decentralized waste management. Throughout the expedition, Plastic Odyssey engineers have been able to enhance their knowledge of recycling machines to offer low-tech containerized factories. Positioned within a set of containers and equipped with photovoltaic panels, this ergonomic recycling chain can transform more than 500 tons of plastic waste into high-value products per year, particularly for the furniture and construction sectors.
Setting up in Cebu and Manila, Philippines
The two factories are currently under construction in Cebu and Manila, where engineers and operators from DELFINGEN and Plastic Odyssey are combining their efforts and ingenuity to develop and prepare all the necessary facilities to add value to plastic waste and transform it into useful resources for local communities!
These two new recycling units will be operational within a few weeks, to coincide with the vessel’s scheduled stopovers in the Philippines in November and December 2024.
This initiative, set up on a tight deadline, is made possible thanks to the essential support of a local partner such as DELFINGEN. It demonstrates that it is possible to quickly and globally deploy practical solutions to combat plastic pollution.
These two pilot units mark the beginning of a long collaboration to replicate this model of recycling micro-factories across the many islands of the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
The Plastic Odyssey Local Factories are inspired by innovations and systems used on the ground around the world. They bring together, in the form of a container, all the machines necessary for the transformation of waste into new material or object.
