Plastic Odyssey studies initiatives that have succeeded in reducing their use of plastic, documents them, and shares this data with anyone who would like to be inspired to replicate them all over the world.
Scientists are unanimous and the numbers are terrifying: our current plastic consumption is not sustainable and cannot last forever. We need a plan B. But how to change, and where to start?
Plastic Odyssey meets those who are in the process of writing this plan B, by conviction, by opportunity, or by constraint: a school that has succeeded in removing plastic from its cafeteria, a small town that has eradicated plastic bags by training women to make cloth bags, an island that teaches its young people how to make fishing gear out of palm leaves to eradicate plastic fishing nets…
Each of the identified cases is documented and freely disseminated, in order to inspire other actors, in other territories.

According to the latest OECD report ‘Global Plastic Perspectives’1, by 2060, human societies are expected to produce and use three times more plastic than in 2019. This means that we will consume more than 1.2 billion tonnes of plastic each year. Equivalent to 65 new plastic bags per person per day, based on a population of 10 billion people.
Yet, another path is possible: that of renunciation, which means the progressive, organized, delimited, and democratic abandonment of plastic. In other words, instead of asking how to live with it, let’s redirect our financial and scientific efforts to imagine how to live without it.
Together, designers, engineers, social science researchers, citizens, politicians, and industrialists, we decide to radically change strategy in order to build a post-plastic society.
