A fishing net made from arouman, an Amazonian plant

In French Guiana, members of the Kali’nas Amerindian community weave mats for shrimp and freshwater fish from the fibers of arouman, a plant that grows everywhere in this region. Unlike plastic fishing nets, the creel is made entirely from plant material, and will degrade naturally if lost at sea.
