A fishing net made from date palm, a Mediterranean tree

On the Kerkennah islands in Tunisia, the Jeunes Sciences association is training local residents to make fishing nets from date palms. This know-how, once mastered by all the island’s fishermen, is now disappearing. Unlike their plastic counterparts that crack in the sun and salt, these natural traps are durable, resistant, repairable, and fully biodegradable.
